Dr. Dobson weighs in on Connecticut gay marriage

Connecticut has captured what little market there is in the news for anything other than the global economic meltdown. Dr. James Dobson is chiming in:

“Today’s ruling by the Connecticut Supreme Court to impose same-sex 'marriage' adds another tragic example of runaway judges trampling on citizens’ right to decide public policy for themselves. In doing so, the court has placed the desires of adults over the needs of children, who, social science research proves, do best when they are raised by their married mom and dad living in the same home.

“We decry this decision by justices unelected and unaccountable to the people, and will do whatever is necessary to oppose it. Not only have these judges knowingly deprived Connecticut children of a mother or a father, but they have usurped the role of the legislators to create law. Short of a federal marriage-protection amendment, marriage can only be truly protected by defining it in state constitutions. I pray the citizens of California, Arizona and Florida will seize the opportunity next month to settle this marriage crisis in their states once and for all.”

Dobson is a nutcase, bad spokesperson for religion.

Keep your wingnuttery to yourself.

Live and Let live.

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. For the moment I still have the right to express myself on such matters as does Dr. Dobson and I intend to exercise it. Not to worry; I'm sure I won't possess that right for much longer and then you will no longer be forced to endure the existence of blogs such as this.

I would only note, as to Dobson's remarks (and similar remarks by adherents of traditional religion), that his opponents never deal with the substance of what is said. All we usually get is comments about wingnuttery.

I think it behooves people on your side of such issues to think more carefully before jettisoning something that all civilizations have understood to be normal and salutary for 3500+ years. It is an act of monumental presumption to think that we can simply discard the idea of marriage as if it were last year's offerings from the fashion shows of Milan. Surely, what replaces it will not only be harmful to society but, if experience is any guide, far more intolerant than any religious voices in America. We are already seeing the beginnings of this in Massachusetts and it will try to come to Connecticut no doubt. The homosexual activists will not be content to simply live and let live.

no offense, but why would you even care if 2 gay people got married? Is it any of your business?

Is it the governments business to decide who can love who?

It seems like your nightmare is already here. You want the government in my womb, in Terry Schiavo's hospital room, and in my bedroom.

Jesus taught tolerance. Jesus would pray for an irrational bigot like Dobson.

Do you have any particular Bible verses in mind to demonstrate that Jesus taught "tolerance?"

If Jesus, as an Orthodox Jew, was teaching that anger was equivalent to murder and lust was equivalent to adultery, then I wonder what he would think about the idea of homosexual marriage.

No offense, but if you are going to make religious arguments then it would behoove you to know what those religions actually teach.

When I read this in the local paper I thought, "How the heck did this happen?!" The court pulled an end run on the people of CT. I didn't see it coming. And isn't it convenient for our governor to say she is opposed to it but yet she has no intention of trying to do something about it.
